John Bart Hodgens

Clinical Psychologist and Associate Scientist, Civitan, International Research Center. Assistant Professor, UAB Dept. of Psychology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, UK

Dr. Hodgens received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Auburn University in 1985. He currently directs interdisciplinary clinics focusing on the evaluation and treatment of childhood behavior disorders and learning disabilities through the Sparks Clinics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). His current research interests include: the sluggish cognitive tempo factor as it relates to Predominantly Inattentive ADHD. He established The ADHD Clinic in 1989 at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama and continues this work through the Sparks’ Behavioral Assessment Clinic, which he co-directs with developmental pediatrician, Snehal Khatri, MD. Some families contacting Sparks Clinics with behavioral concerns can be seen in the Initial Behavioral Consult Clinic, where a more immediate assessment of the child’s needs are made and appropriate recommendations are given to parents. Dr. Hodgens also directs UAB’s Summer Treatment Program (STP). This 6-week intensive treatment program designed for children ages 6-12 with behavior disorders or significant social concerns. The STP has been identified as one of the most effective non-medical methods of treatment of childhood behavior problems. Dr. Hodgens also participates in the Sparks’ Psychology Clinic, where families can be seen for outpatient therapy or school consultation.
